Soul Control - Reno

Reno Revival Party @ Relish, Great Northern Warehouse, Sunday 14th October 2007
Review - Diane

This was an event with a difference, as it was taking place on a Sunday evening going through into the early hours of Monday morning. The lush venue wasn’t packed to the brim but it was full enough for a good night to be had. The DJ’s Persian, Hewan Clarke & Dr D certainly put on a show for the attending masses who danced “all night long” to classics from the Mary Jane Girls, The Blackbyrds, Roy Ayers……if you were around when the legendary Reno was at its height you’ll get the drift as to the rest of what was played.

Soul Control - New Event review

There wasn’t one person who didn’t seem to enjoy the night which can only be described as a major success for the promoter Tony Gordon aka Skiddy. Over the last 18 months Tony has promoted several Old Skool nights with a mixture of Reggae, Lovers Rock and Revival Soul being the order of the day with varying degrees of success, but this night was aimed at, and dedicated to the South Central Manchester Masses who regularly paid homage to the Reno on a weekly basis throughout the 70’s and 80’s and they fully appreciated the efforts of all who put together and executed the event.

The Rare Grooves played might have gone over the heads of some of those present who were not lucky enough to experience the Reno at first hand, but the quality grooves played transcended any generation barriers. A quality record is a quality record no matter which decade it was created.

Soul Control Verdict:
The future looks bright for the Reno Revival at Relish; I look forward to the next one.
